I operate an online correspondence writing school at http://www.WritersCollege.com which has about 60 courses and 30 or so teachers. I teach five of the courses myself. The school has operated as-is since 1998, making it one of the largest and oldest internet training schools for writers. Before that, from 1988 to 1998, I taught nonfiction writing for America Online. I have also taught writing by 'distance learning' for university systems in Ohio and California, and held seminars across Florida.

Lsted below are the five courses I teach, but there are many others too, at the school web site. We add new courses from time to time, so check back. There's also a newsletter you may subscribe to.

Nonfiction Freelance Writing Business This is NOT a course about how to write. The course is intended to teach you how to MARKET yourself and how to run the BUSINESS of nonfiction writing on a freelance basis. Nonfiction includes magazines, books and assorted brochures and newsletters. The course touches upon all these but focuses most heavily upon the magazine market. 6 weeks / $180
Magazine Query Letters Amateurs write nonfiction magazine articles and then look for someone to buy them. Pros know to query first, using a one-page letter to sound out an editor on an idea. Only after the editor agrees to buy the manuscript do they then start writing. This course will teach you how to write a query letter that can attract the interest of an editor and clinch the sale. In this course you will focus your idea and write a query hands-on help from a professional writer who has seen it all and who is totally non-judgmental about your writing. Expect advice and help, not criticism and arrogance.. 4 weeks / $120
Magazine Articles This course is intended to teach you how to write a standard nonfiction magazine article using research and interviews. I will tell you how to do this, and will guide you through a short sample article, which you will write, word by word. I will be critiquing your work. I do not criticize; I critique--gently and informatively.

The class consists of two parts. Each week I upload, to our private library, materials you should read before the next week. Each week you also receive an assignment to carry out before the next class. The homework will be a magazine article. You will write a manuscript for me and then rewrite it to incorporate into it any suggestions I might make. 6 weeks / $180
Research and Interviewing Writers must be part private detective, part psychologist, part university professor, part lawyer. They have to be able to find information, locate and interview experts, know how to apply the rules of rigorous scholarship to their findings, and know how to stay out of legal trouble while doing all this. Writers used to hang out in public libraries, gathering information and cobwebs alike. Today they still do that but also cruise the internet and world wide web, even as their fax machines hum with incoming data from government and private sources. This course will discuss all of this and give you some ideas of where to get started on your own projects. 4 weeks / $120
Photography for Writers Being able to take photos, or find photos, to accompany your writing can help sell the story, keep control over your work, and even earn you extra money. Photography is not rocket science, and most people already have cameras capable of taking publishable pictures. Professional-quality photos are often available free if you know where to ask. This course will discuss what editors and art directors look for in photos, how to take those photos, and how to locate photos when you can't take them. Warning: this is not a course for professional-quality photographers; this is a very basic course for writers who want to take photos on the side to illustrate their work.. 4 weeks / $120
