and some samples

I started freelance nonfiction writing in 1982 and by 1984 was doing it full-time. Since then I've done more than a thousand magazine articles (and I gave up counting some years back). I worked for ten years as a stringer for Reuters, covering the entire west coast of Florida for them. I've done a few books and quite a few chapters in other books. I've done all sorts of PR and advertorial work. I've edited three magazines and been a department editor for two others. I have yet to write a restaurant menu but, if the pay is right, give me a call.

I do this for a living. If you call with an idea or assignment, be prepared to discuss pay, rights you wish to own, deadlines, any contacts you think I need to use, photography or artwork needs, any special layout needs, length and tone.

I have been interviewed and featured in the following books:

  • Tools of the Writers Trade
  • How to Start a Home-Based Writing Business
  • Real People working in Education
  • Idiot's Guild to Getting Published.

Areas of expertise and tone/voice: I usually resist being pigeonholed and, as a longtime freelance journalist, can write about almost any topic if I can find the right people to interview. As you can see from the samples on this web site, I run the gamut from humor to darkly serious, from frothy to very technical.

What you will not see here are the jobs I have turned down because I did not feel I could do them justice. If I can do the job, I'll tell you so. If I cannot, I'll tell you that too.
